BALEARIC BOC

The Balearic boc, scientifically known as Capra hircus var. majorcan, is a unique species of wild goat native to the Balearic Islands. It is highly valued for its rarity, striking appearance, and its role in the biodiversity of the region. The Balearic boc is medium-sized, with males weighing up to 50 kg. It has a reddish-brown coat with a black underside, forehead, and spine, which provides excellent camouflage in its rocky habitat. Males are distinguished by their large, spiraling horns, which are a defining feature of the species. Females have smaller, more slender horns.

  • This species is endemic to the Balearic Islands, particularly in areas like Alcúdia and Formentor. It thrives in arid, mountainous regions with steep cliffs and sparse vegetation. These environments offer both shelter and food, allowing the Balearic boc to adapt and flourish.

  • The Balearic boc is primarily diurnal, being most active during the day. It feeds on grasses, bushes, and lichens, obtaining some of its metabolic water from food. Despite its shy nature, it is agile and quick, often fleeing uphill at the first sign of danger.
