FALLOW DEAR

The Iberian fallow deer, scientifically known as Dama dama, is a graceful and striking species recognized by its distinct appearance and behaviors. It is highly valued as a game animal in Spain and is known for its elegance and adaptability. The fallow deer is medium-sized with a body length of approximately 130–170 cm and a shoulder height of 85–110 cm. Its coat changes with the seasons: in summer, it displays a reddish-brown color with white spots, while in winter, it turns darker and less spotted. Males are known for their impressive palmate (broad, flattened) antlers, which distinguish them from other deer species.

  • This species thrives in Mediterranean woodlands, open forests, and dehesas. It prefers environments that offer a combination of tree cover for shelter and open spaces for grazing. The Iberian fallow deer is also highly adaptable and can be found in both lowland and mountainous regions.

  • The fallow deer is crepuscular, being most active during dawn and dusk. Its diet consists of grass, leaves, bark, and acorns. It is a social animal, often seen in groups, especially females and their young. During the rutting season in autumn, males become territorial and use their antlers to compete for mates.
