MOUFLON

The mouflon, scientifically known as Ovis orientalis musimon, is a species of wild sheep native to the Mediterranean. It is admired for its striking appearance and remarkable adaptability to rugged terrains. In Spain, it holds great value both for its uniqueness and as a prized game species. The mouflon is robust and compact in build. Males are distinguished by their spirally curved horns, which can reach impressive sizes and are one of their most remarkable traits. Females generally have smaller horns or lack them altogether. Their coat is reddish-brown with darker tones on the neck and shoulders, and a lighter stripe along the belly.

  • Mouflons are found in mountainous areas with forests and rocky terrains. They prefer rugged landscapes that provide shelter and protection from predators. They are also commonly found in dehesas and open areas with sparse vegetation.

  • Mouflons are gregarious animals, often living in small groups. They feed on grasses, shrubs, and occasionally on bushes. They are diurnal, being most active in the early morning and late afternoon. During the mating season, males engage in impressive battles using their horns to establish dominance and secure mates.
