WILDBOAR

The Iberian wild boar, scientifically known as Sus scrofa, is a highly adaptable and robust species native to the Iberian Peninsula. It is admired for its resilience, intelligence, and its significance in Spain's ecosystems and hunting traditions. The Iberian wild boar is medium to large in size, with males typically reaching up to 150 kg. Its coat is coarse and bristly, ranging in color from dark brown to grayish-black, with some seasonal variation. Males have distinctive sharp tusks, which they use for foraging and defense. Their muscular build and sturdy legs enable them to traverse difficult terrain effortlessly.

  • Wild boars are highly adaptable and thrive in diverse environments, including forests, dehesas, scrublands, and agricultural areas. They are particularly prevalent in regions with dense vegetation, where they can find cover and access a variety of food sources. Their presence in rural areas sometimes leads to interactions with human activities.

  • The Iberian wild boar is omnivorous, feeding on roots, fruits, nuts (such as acorns), small animals, and even carrion. It is mostly nocturnal, with peak activity occurring during the night and twilight hours. They are social animals, often forming groups called sounders, consisting of females and their offspring, while adult males tend to live solitary lives except during mating season.
